Managing Editor- The Hay journal

As Managing Editor, the person holding this position would be responsible for designing, leading, and maintaining output and quality across the Hay Journal’s various content streams, from full-length research-driven features to shorter Research Spotlight articles to all aspects of quarterly publication of the journal. The Hay Journal’s content strategy melds the timeliness and accessibility of an online publication with the depth of a research organization.

The Managing Editor is a key member of the Hay Institute’s leadership team, taking part in all of our research discussions, debates, and major decisions. Significant responsibilities include:

Lead and guide the selection and production of quarterly Hay Journal
Editor write approximately 2-3 smaller-scale articles per month for the Hay blog,
Recruit, select, and train editorial team members and freelance writers and researcher, as needed
Work with guide the leadership team in designing and directing any relevant existing or potential initiatives
Participate in 1-2 conference calls per month and an annual in-person

The expected time commitment for this position is approximately 10-15  hours per week on average.

For the managing editor role, in particular, we are seeking a detail-oriented leader with as many of the below qualifications as possible:

Superlative writing  and editing skills
A background or training in journalism, publishing, or creative nonfiction
Substantial experience editing, teaching, or tutoring other writers
Strong project management skills and experience, including experience working with external contractors
Facility with digital media and an eye for graphic design
A perfectionist streak and determination to ensure excellence in presentation
Advanced degree (preferably Ph.D.) in Political Science, Social Science, Psychology, International Studies, Law, Communications, and Journalism.
